Construction Manager – 275kV NZT OSBL Cable project
Job description:
The Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at delivering a fully integrated, large-scale Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) system in the Teesside region. A critical component of the project is the provision of a high-voltage electrical connection to the National Grid (NG) 275kV system, enabling power export from the proposed generation facility.
This connection will be achieved via a new underground 275kV cable system, approximately 1.5 km in length, providing a 935 MVA transmission capacity. The cable route will run from the proposed 275kV Coatham Substation (COAM) to the new 275kV Dormanstown Substation (DOWN), which is located adjacent to the existing NG Tod Point Substation.
To deliver this work, BP has appointed Costain as the main contractor responsible for the design and construction of the 275kV cable system. Emico Ltd, acting as a subcontractor to Costain, has been engaged to carry out the detailed design and supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the cable system.
We are seeking an experienced Construction Manager to support the delivery of 275kV EHV cable project for Emico.
The role will be focused on the management, coordination and safe delivery of the underground cable installation works, including cable pulling, jointing, testing support, subcontractor coordination and associated construction documentation.
The Construction Manager must have demonstrable experience in EHV underground cable projects, preferably including both 275kV and 400kV cable systems. Previous experience managing cable pulling subcontractors and EHV jointing teams is essential. The civil works are not within our direct scope; therefore, management of civil construction teams is not a primary requirement. However, the Construction Manager will be expected to interface effectively with civil contractors, site representatives and other project stakeholders to ensure access, readiness, handovers and construction interfaces are properly managed.
The role will initially allow for remote working prior to mobilisation, supporting planning, documentation review, subcontractor coordination and construction readiness activities. From September 2026, the Construction Manager will be required to be based on site in Teesside and remain site-based through to mechanical completion, currently anticipated in August 2027. The project location will be within the Teesside area, including Middlesbrough / Stockton-on-Tees and surrounding project work fronts.
The Construction Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of construction activities within the cable installation scope. This will include running the daytime site teams, coordinating direct labour and subcontractors, managing daily progress, ensuring works are completed safely and in accordance with approved procedures, and reporting progress, risks, issues and resource requirements back to the project management team.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing the execution of 275kV cable installation activities, including cable drum handling interfaces, cable pulling, jointing support, testing readiness and mechanical completion activities.
- Supervising and coordinating cable pulling subcontractors, jointing teams and associated specialist suppliers.
- Ensuring all works are carried out in accordance with approved RAMS, ITPs, construction plans, quality procedures and project specifications.
- Supporting the preparation, review and implementation of construction documentation, including Inspection and Test Plans, Risk Assessments and Method Statements, construction execution plans, lift plans, permits, work packs and site instructions.
- Coordinating site readiness, access, logistics, temporary works interfaces, cable route readiness and handover requirements with the wider project team.
- Monitoring site progress against the construction programme and identifying any delays, constraints or additional resource requirements.
- Ensuring quality records, inspection records, hold points and construction evidence are completed and maintained in line with project document control and handover requirements, including MDR / document status obligations where applicable.
- Leading daily coordination with supervisors, subcontractors and site teams, including toolbox talks, briefings, progress meetings and look-ahead planning.
- Maintaining a strong safety culture and ensuring all site activities are carried out in compliance with HSE requirements, permits and approved working methods.
- Reporting regularly to the Project Manager / Construction Lead on progress, safety performance, quality issues, risks, changes and upcoming activities.
The successful candidate should be confident working in a regulated project environment and able to manage multiple interfaces between the client, main contractor, cable subcontractors, jointing teams, logistics providers and quality representatives. Strong communication, planning and leadership skills are essential, together with the ability to drive safe delivery while maintaining programme and quality requirements.
The normal working pattern will be Monday to Friday, aligned with project site working hours. Additional attendance may be required by exception during critical activities, subject to project requirements.
The anticipated day rate is expected to be in the region of £400–£500 per day, depending on experience, competence and suitability for the role.
